In the new period, drivers using mobile phones while driving will face a monetary fine for the first offense, and for repeat offenses, their driver's license will be confiscated. Similar penalties will apply for seatbelt violations.

Repeated increases in traffic fines and deterrent measures have brought stricter rules for drivers. With the new traffic regulation that came into effect on March 25, 2026, law enforcement has initiated a "zero tolerance" policy against rule violations.

Under this regulation, traffic checks are no longer conducted solely from the ground. Rules monitored from the air are strictly controlled with the help of drones in cities like Edirne. Traffic teams are detecting drivers who talk on their mobile phones or text while driving through drone-supported applications. Authorities state that the new method provides significant deterrence against instant rule violations.

PENALTY AMOUNTS AND SANCTIONS INCREASED

Drivers found using mobile phones while at the wheel face an administrative fine of 5,000 lira for the first violation. If the same violation occurs again within a year, the fine can increase to 20,000 lira, and the driver's license will be confiscated for 30 days for each repeat offense.

REVISED SEAT BELT FINES

The new regulation does not only cover mobile phone usage. Drivers and passengers who do not wear seat belts in the vehicle are fined 2,500 lira. If the same violation is repeated four times in a year, the penalty of license confiscation comes into effect. These fines emphasize the importance of safety for both the driver and other passengers on the road.

Through these tightened measures, the aim is to enhance traffic safety and prevent accidents. Authorities continue to warn drivers to comply with traffic rules and convey the message that the new rules will be strictly enforced.
