Thousands of people took to the streets in Caracas, the capital of Venezuela, to support President Nicolas Maduro, who was detained by the U.S. military intervention.

In the city center of Caracas, thousands of people held a demonstration under the name "Great March for Venezuela" to condemn the U.S. military operation that kidnapped President Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores after midnight on Saturday.

THOUSANDS MARCHED AGAINST THE U.S.

Maduro supporters carried banners against the U.S. military intervention and the detention of their president, chanting slogans such as "Venezuela is fighting resolutely," "We want him (Maduro) back," "Give us back our working-class president," "Sovereignty is not up for negotiation," and "We are always loyal to Maduro."

A protester speaking to the Venezuelan press said, "We demand respect for our sovereignty and the return of our President Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores."

Support demonstrations for Maduro also took place outside Venezuela in some Latin American countries like Cuba and Colombia, as well as in European countries like Spain.

On the other hand, in different parts of the world, demonstrations celebrating the U.S. intervention were held by Venezuelan opposition and right-wing groups.

WHAT HAD HAPPENED?

The U.S. had kidnapped President Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores "to be tried" during its attacks on Venezuela.

Vice President Rodriguez stated that her country would not bow to the U.S. and that Maduro was the only leader of Venezuela.

The Venezuelan Supreme Court announced that the name to temporarily take the seat vacated by Maduro was Delcy Rodriguez.

Venezuelan Defense Minister Lopez later stated in a message read on behalf of the army, "By the decision of the Supreme Court, Vice President Delcy Rodriguez has been appointed to assume all powers, duties, and responsibilities as President, and this appointment has been made in full compliance with the State of Emergency Law and the National Security Law."

In a press conference held after the raid, Trump mentioned that Rodríguez had expressed her willingness to work with the U.S., which would allow her to "temporarily govern" Venezuela.
