Turkey's elderly population, which stands at 9 million 112 thousand 298, exceeds the total population of 96 countries, including Switzerland, Denmark, Ireland, New Zealand, and Armenia. The elderly population constitutes 10.6% of Turkey's total population.
Turkey is "aging." According to the data from the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK), the population aged 65 and over in our country has surpassed the population of many countries.
THE ELDERLY POPULATION EXCEEDS 96 COUNTRIES' POPULATION
As of last year, the world's population, which was 8 billion 161 million 973 thousand, consisted of 10.2% elderly population. During the same period, it was determined that 9 million 112 thousand 298 individuals, constituting 10.6% of Turkey's population, which was identified as 85 million 664 thousand 944, were elderly. The number of elderly individuals in Turkey has surpassed the population of 96 countries, including Switzerland, Serbia, Ireland, New Zealand, Armenia, and Iceland. On the other hand, last year, China ranked first in elderly population with 208 million 147 thousand 281 individuals, followed by India with 103 million 691 thousand 375 individuals and the USA with 61 million 930 thousand 598 individuals.
COUNTRY WITH THE HIGHEST ELDERLY POPULATION RATIO
The country with the highest ratio of elderly population to total population is Monaco, with 36.2%. Of Monaco's population of 38 thousand 631, 13 thousand 972 are elderly. In terms of the ratio of elderly population to total population, this country is followed by Japan with 29.8%, Italy with 24.6%, Portugal with 24.5%, and Greece with 23.9%. The countries with the lowest ratio of elderly population to total population are Qatar with 1.7%, the United Arab Emirates with 1.8%, Zambia with 1.9%, Chad and Sudan with 2.1%, and the Central African Republic with 2.2%.
