USGS UPDATED THE EARTHQUAKE MAGNITUDE
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) updated its initial statement regarding the earthquakes in Venezuela. The agency, which first announced the earthquake as magnitude 7.1, later reported in its assessment that a second earthquake of magnitude 7.5 occurred 23 kilometers southeast of Yumare in Yaracuy state, and a second earthquake of magnitude 7.2 occurred 24 kilometers northeast of San Felipe.
According to information shared by the USGS, the depth of the earthquake in Yumare was measured at 10 kilometers, and the depth of the earthquake in San Felipe was measured at 21.9 kilometers. It was reported that the two earthquakes occurred only 39 seconds apart.
BUILDINGS COLLAPSED, TEAMS WERE DEPLOYED TO THE REGION
According to reports in the Venezuelan press, buildings collapsed in some areas after the earthquakes. While numerous search and rescue teams were dispatched to the debris sites, clear information on casualties and property damage has not yet been obtained due to the collapse of internet infrastructure in some cities.
STATE OF EMERGENCY DECLARED
Venezuela's Interim President Delcy Rodriguez announced that a state of emergency has been declared following the consecutive earthquakes of magnitude 7.5 and 7.2. Speaking at a press conference in the capital Caracas, Rodriguez stated that emergency mechanisms under the General Staff were activated and that Simon Bolivar International Airport was closed until further notice.
THE TOLL OF THE EARTHQUAKE IS HEAVY
Rodriguez provided information on the current situation in a press conference following the two major earthquakes that struck the country. Stating that 32 people lost their lives and more than 700 people were injured in the earthquake, Rodriguez said search and rescue operations were ongoing and there were concerns that the death toll could rise.
"A REAL TRAGEDY IS UNFOLDING"
Noting that La Guaria is the state most affected by the earthquake, Rodriguez said, "Dozens of buildings have collapsed. We are carrying out that difficult task of saving the lives that God has allowed us to save. La Guaria is facing a real tragedy and is a disaster area."
