Geology Engineer Prof. Dr. Şener Üşümezsoy, who has drawn attention with his accurate predictions in recent times, stated that no significant tremors are expected in the region following the 6.1 magnitude earthquake in Sındırgı. Emphasizing that the Simav fault still poses a risk, the expert said, "Only Simav remains."

Geology Engineer Prof. Dr. Şener Üşümezsoy made striking statements following the 6.1 magnitude earthquake that occurred in August in the Sındırgı district of Balıkesir. Speaking to CNN Türk, Üşümezsoy stated that a major earthquake is not expected around Sındırgı, but the Simav fault line is still at risk.

"A MAJOR EARTHQUAKE SHOULD NOT BE EXPECTED SOUTH OF SINDIRGI"

Üşümezsoy evaluated the fault movements in the region after the earthquake in Sındırgı. The expert expressed that a 15-kilometer rupture has occurred, stating, "There is a movement towards the fault line located 7-8 kilometers southeast of Sındırgı. This is happening in the mountainous part of the region. There is approximately 100 kilometers of surface rupture. However, this does not indicate a high probability of a major earthquake," he said.

Üşümezsoy also emphasized that citizens should not panic, stating, "The 4.2 magnitude tremor that occurred after the 6.1 main earthquake is an aftershock. Tremors of up to 4.9 magnitude may be experienced. There is no need to spend the night outside; this fault line has completed its rupture," he said.

"TREMORS IN THE BLACK SEA ARE TRIGGERED EARTHQUAKES"

Referring to the 3.9 magnitude earthquake that occurred off the Black Sea, Üşümezsoy stated that such movements would not affect Marmara. "After the fault that broke on April 23, there was a stress accumulation in the region. The earthquakes in the Black Sea are not aftershocks in the northern direction, but triggered earthquakes. They do not affect the fault system in Marmara," he stated.

"ONLY SIMAV REMAINS"

Pointing out other fault lines in the region, Üşümezsoy said, "The two main fault lines around Sındırgı have ruptured, so we do not expect an earthquake here for a long time. However, only Simav remains; the fault in Simav has not yet ruptured," he said.

Emphasizing that adobe structures in mountainous areas pose a risk, the expert warned, "There may be collapses in these areas. The stress transfer between the faults has further strained the Simav fault line. Therefore, caution should be exercised," he warned.

"THERE IS NO CAUSE FOR CONCERN IN SILIVRI AND MARMARA"

Üşümezsoy stated that the tremors occurring around Silivri should not cause concern, saying, "The depression located within Silivri is a fault that lies between two breaks. A major earthquake is not expected here. The earthquake in the Black Sea yesterday was also part of the same system; there is no need for those living in Silivri to be afraid," he said.

Highlighting the risky area in Marmara, Üşümezsoy noted, "Since 1999, the fault in the Kumburgaz–Silivri depression, which is 35 kilometers long, has posed the highest risk. This fault can produce an earthquake of up to 6.5 magnitude. However, I believe that the line between Silivri and Yeşilköy is in two parts. If these two parts rupture separately, there could be at most two earthquakes of 6.2 magnitude," he assessed.
