Tensions are rising following an incident in Montenegro involving Turkish citizens, during which one person was stabbed. As the repercussions of Montenegro suspending visa-free travel for Turks continue, police seized a large number of baseball bats prepared for an attack near the 'Komanka' building in the Zabjelo neighborhood.
Tensions continue in Montenegro. Following attacks and arson incidents targeting Turkish citizens and businesses owned by Turks in the capital Podgorica, the police announced today that individuals suspected of preparing to attack Turkish citizens have been detained.
BASEBALL BATS PREPARED FOR ATTACK FOUND In a statement made by the police, it was expressed that baseball bats prepared for the attack were seized, while no details were provided regarding the number of people detained. The statement said, "Officials from the Security Department of the Podgorica Police Directorate have conducted coordinated measures and operations in the field as part of the announced intensified activities regarding the monitoring of the security situation in Podgorica following an attack carried out by two foreign nationals, one Turkish and the other Azerbaijani, on a citizen named M.J. the previous night, and regarding posts containing violence and hate speech on social media. Several Montenegrin citizens have been taken to the police station. These individuals have been detained on suspicion of planning violent actions. In this context, a large number of baseball bats prepared for the attack were found near the 'Komanka' building in the Zabjelo neighborhood and were seized," it was stated.
CALL FROM THE POLICE TO CITIZENS The police also called on citizens to stay away from all forms of violence, stating, "The police will carry out intensified activities in the field to protect the life and property safety of all citizens. Any illegal and irresponsible behavior will be punished without exception, and those responsible will be brought to justice under the law," it was stated.
TENSION ESCALATED AFTER STABBING INCIDENT Following an incident last Saturday evening in the Zabjelo neighborhood of Podgorica, where Turkish citizens were involved and one person was injured by a knife, protests and acts of violence against Turkish citizens occurred in the region.
MONTENEGRO HAD DECIDED TO IMPLEMENT VISA REQUIREMENTS FOR TURKISH CITIZENS Due to official statements and news in the media referring directly to those involved in the incident as "Turkish citizens," and the remarks of some radical Montenegrin politicians regarding Turkish citizens, tensions escalated, and arson attacks targeting businesses owned by Turkish citizens occurred last night.
The Montenegrin government also announced today that, in light of recent events, the visa-free travel application for Turkish citizens has been temporarily suspended for security reasons.
