Neighborhood residents demanded security cameras in the park.
FAMILIES AND CHILDREN PANICKED The incident took place around 22:00 in Barış Manço Park, located on Evyap Street in Akşemsettin neighborhood of Istanbul Eyüpsultan. According to allegations, a person named M.S. approached two unidentified young people sitting on a bench and fired multiple shots with a gun. The attacker then ran away from the scene and later voluntarily surrendered to the police. Families and children who were spending time in the park during the gunshots experienced great fear and panic. The seriously injured 2 young men were given first aid by the surrounding citizens. The citizens tried to prevent the injured from losing blood by using t-shirts and pillows, and then reported the incident to the police and medical teams. Upon the notification, the police and medical teams were dispatched to the scene. The 2 people injured in the armed attack were taken to the hospital by ambulance. The police closed the street with a security tape, and the crime scene investigation teams conducted their work.
"WORDS GET STUCK IN OUR THROATS" Mevlüt Kızılkaya, a witness to the incident, described what happened as follows: "We are still under the influence of the incident. Words get stuck in our throats. We were sitting in the park as a family between 22:00 and 22:30. We set up our table and chairs. We were drinking tea. At that moment, we didn't realize that there was a gunshot. We thought they were setting off fireworks. Later, when 4 or 5 shots were fired in a row, I said it's a gun." he said.
"WE DID THE FIRST AID UNTIL THE AMBULANCE ARRIVED" Kızılkaya, who stated that one of the injured was the son of their friend who lived in the same street, said, "Barış Manço Park is one of the largest parks in this area. Hundreds of children were playing in this area, and my child was among them. After the gunshots, we directed ourselves there. I turned around and saw that it was the son of our friend who lived in the same street. He is a child who grew up in our hands. What harm can a child do to anyone? We did the first aid until the ambulance arrived. We turned him on his side. He had two bullets in his groin and one in his back. We applied compression with t-shirts and pillows. While we were dealing with the injured person on the ground, they said that someone had fallen down below. We heard about it later. We cried a lot here. We couldn't do anything." he said.
"WE WANT CAMERAS IN BARIŞ MANÇO PARK" Kızılkaya, who said that there should be security cameras in the park where the incident took place, said, "This is Barış Manço Park in Akşemsettin neighborhood, Eyüpsultan. It is one of the largest parks in this area. It happened today. It can happen tomorrow or any other day. The park is a place where families gather. When families come here, they know each other. But there are always strangers coming in and out. We are sitting here with fear, and unfortunately, we will never be able to sit here again. My only request from the authorities is that we want cameras in Barış Manço Park. There is no camera, no control, no patrol." he said. The police continue their investigation into the incident.
