Unbelievable scam! They managed to sell a 15 million worth land for 5 million.

04.09.2024 12:50

Muammer Çatıkkaş Silsüpür, a 68-year-old resident of Küçükçekmece, Istanbul, became a victim of scammers pretending to be police officers. Silsüpür, who sold his house and land with a market value of 15 million lira for 5 million lira and handed the money over to the fraudsters, said, "My wife and I were hypnotized."

In Küçükçekme, scammers who called Muammer Çatıkkaş Silsüpür, 68 years old, introduced themselves as police officers. The fake police officers claimed that a gang had obtained a fake ID in Muammer Çatıkkaş's name and was conducting a secret operation. They convinced Muammer Çatıkkaş and his wife Kadir Silsüpür to sell all their assets, including a house and land in Kastamonu worth 15 million lira, for 5 million lira. After two months of intense phone communication, the scammers arranged a meeting with Kadir Silsüpür in Çankırı to collect the money. The family realized the truth and reported the incident to the police.

Muammer Çatıkkaş Silsüpür stated, "I received a phone call from someone claiming to be Chief Inspector Mehmet Öztürk from Gayrettepe. They said that I had lost my ID. I checked my bag and said, 'No, I haven't lost it.' They continued by sending me a photo of a woman with my ID through WhatsApp and said, 'Your ID has been stolen and is being used.' They gave me their business card and said, 'They will sell your properties, you have fallen into the hands of a gang. Let's secure your assets.' They sent messages day and night. They said, 'Don't tell anyone about this secret operation. We have been after them for 6 months, we will bring them down. Don't even tell your children.' A week later, we went to our hometown. Even when we were leaving, they said, 'Take the title deeds with you.' On the way, they gave me the name and number of a real estate agent. I called the agent and said, 'I found your number online.' I sold the title deeds, thinking that they would sell these lands. I didn't even negotiate because they told us, 'When you get your new ID, the title deeds will be transferred to your new ID. The buyers will not be harmed. The prosecutor will call them and refund their money.' We sold them this way. Three people constantly talked to us and said, 'Don't even tell your children. This gang will harm your children and escape abroad.' We lost everything without telling anyone because of this fear. After understanding the situation, it was too late. Everything is gone; our house, our land. I am asking for help from my country, my President, my Minister of Interior, and my Minister of Justice. They should not go unpunished. We are losing sleep day and night. We want them to be caught. The one who cries does not surprise the one who laughs. We did not sell willingly."

"MY WIFE AND I WERE HYPNOTIZED"

Kadir Silsüpür said, "We sold my wife's parents' lands and house. They asked us to convert the money into dollars. In our first sale, they said, 'Don't accept Turkish currency, there are counterfeit bills in Turkish currency.' They said, 'We have officials in banks and title deed offices who will monitor you. We are watching you on cameras.' In this way, we had dollars with us for one day, and we felt uncomfortable. It was 3.5 million lira, converted into dollars. They called my wife in the morning and said that the teams would come and collect the money. They said they would collect it from Çankırı. I went to Çankırı from Tosya. They drove me around for 1-2 kilometers; I would park there, but it didn't work, I would park somewhere else, but it didn't work. There was a street next to the mosque going downhill. Since I didn't know the area well, they took our car to a place where there were no security cameras. A man raised his hand, and I thought he was a police officer. He had a gun on his waist, tall, dark-skinned, around 35-40 years old. He opened the car doors and got in the back. The bag belonged to me, but there was a bag inside it. I said, 'You can put it in the bag.' At that moment, I looked at his face carefully. He put the money in the bag, closed the car door, and walked away. There were no cars in front or behind him. He disappeared like that. My wife and I were hypnotized. If our property is worth 10 million, they say, 'Give it to us for 2 or 3 million, it will be returned to you anyway.' We are in such a desperate situation that I am now seeking refuge in God and our government."

"A LARGE PORTION OF DATA CAN BE DISTRIBUTED FOR FREE"

Cybersecurity Expert Osman Demircan emphasized that this method is frequently used to defraud people over the age of 65. Demircan warned, "Phishing attacks do not only happen through digital means but also through phone calls. Phishing attackers, even if they do it over the phone, need to gain credibility first, and for that, they need information about you. Various data leaked from various platforms at different times have unfortunately been collected under a single database, and a large portion of this collected data can be distributed for free. Phishing attackers use this kind of information in their attacks. They know your name, surname, ID number, address, and the properties you own with the information they obtained from these databases."

"THEY CALL THE ELDERLY AND PROVIDE INFORMATION THAT DAMAGES THEIR DIGNITY"

Demircan said, "Phone scammers start by providing information that damages the dignity of elderly individuals. They pretend to be calling from the police and claim that they are on their side, saying things like, 'It seems like you are a member of a terrorist organization, a company has been opened in your name, and this company has been involved in fraud. Your child seems to be a member of a terrorist organization.' They try to defraud citizens in phone conversations by making them believe that they are calling from the police and trying to clear their names through a secret operation. We have experienced this frequently in the past, and unfortunately, this is still a relevant fraud model."

"DO THESE PROCEDURES THROUGH E-GOVERNMENT"

Demircan said, 'If someone receives a phone call like this; that is, if someone claims to be calling from the police and says 'A company has been opened in your name related to a terrorist organization, there is a lawsuit against you,' there are actually two logical things that citizens can do here. First; it should be to initially check whether there is a lawsuit opened about us in our digital representation, e-Government, and whether a company has been established in our name. In addition to this, it should be ensured that the confirmation is made through the police station they claim to have called, saying 'I was called for these reasons, did you call me' personally. At the same time, the e-Government platform also has the necessary adjustments to prevent partnership with a company or the opening of a company in our name. In other words, by entering e-Government and selecting options such as 'I do not want to be a partner in any company' or 'I do not want to establish a company,' it may be possible to prevent the opening of a company even if our identity is lost," he said.
