The Ministry of National Education (MEB) sent a letter to the governors of 6 provinces on the topic of "Turkish Schools". In the letter, the following provisions in the regulation were reminded:
"In accordance with the general and specific objectives and fundamental principles of Turkish national education specified in the Law on National Education No. 1739, a Turkish name with a specific meaning is given to the institution in line with its purpose, educational program, and level. However, minority schools, foreign and international schools, and language courses that only provide foreign language education may be given foreign names. Other institutions cannot be given names related to continents, countries, nations, history, numbers, foreign institutions, and organizations. Institutions are required to use their names with abbreviations, if any, except for abbreviations listed in the Turkish Language Association's abbreviation index. If the institution name is to be used as an abbreviation, both the institution name and its abbreviation must be included in the permission to establish the institution and the business opening and operating license..."
The Ministry informed the governors of the 6 provinces about the institution names that were not given Turkish names and warned that "it has been determined that the institution names are in violation of the mentioned article and a new institution name proposal is required." It was learned that there are 30 schools in 6 provinces whose names are not in Turkish in violation of the law.
