Prof. Dr. Mustafa Altay, a specialist at Ankara Training and Research Hospital, emphasized that weight loss injections should only be used with a doctor's approval due to their side effects, and that improper use of these medications can lead to serious health issues. Altay stated, "The insulin in counterfeit drugs can cause blood sugar levels to drop below normal, leading to coma and even the patient's death."
Professor Dr. Mustafa Altay, a specialist in Endocrinology and Metabolism Diseases at Ankara Training and Research Hospital, stated that medications known in society as "weight loss injections" should only be used with a doctor's approval due to their side effects.
"WEIGHT LOSS INJECTIONS SHOULD BE USED WITH DOCTOR APPROVAL" In his statement, Altay pointed out that there is a significant level of misinformation in society regarding weight loss injections, influenced by social media. He emphasized that this medication must be used with specialist approval, otherwise, serious side effects may occur.
Altay expressed that before using weight loss injections, patients should undergo advanced examinations by endocrinology specialists due to potential side effects, stressing that these medications cannot be used without a prescription. Altay stated, "Weight loss injections are a treatment option applied to obesity patients who cannot lose weight despite lifestyle changes and exercise programs. Effective results can be obtained in suitable patients, but it must be administered under a doctor's supervision."
THERE ARE CERTAIN CONDITIONS FOR USING INJECTIONS Stating that obesity is a disease, Altay mentioned that they define individuals with a body mass index over 25 as overweight and those over 30 as obese. He said, "For the injection to be used, the person's kidneys and liver must be healthy, there should be no advanced heart failure, they should not have previously experienced pancreatitis, and there should be no family history of thyroid cancer or certain endocrine syndromes." Altay continued:
Prof. Dr. Mustafa Altay "The approach of 'I have a little extra weight, I have obesity, I can use this medication without asking the doctor. After all, I can access the medication for money.' is very wrong. We need to evaluate patients with a family history of pancreatitis, thyroid nodules, or gallstones. The medication can have side effects related to the stomach and intestinal system, gallbladder, and pancreas. In type 2 diabetes patients, if the patient has been using insulin for a long time and has developed eye problems related to diabetes, it has been reported that there may be some eye-related side effects with the use of weight loss injections."
"THERE HAS BEEN A SIGNIFICANT INCREASE IN PATIENT NUMBERS" Referring to the misinformation about the benefits of weight loss injections circulating on social media, Altay noted, "With the increase in speculation regarding some celebrities, there has been a significant rise in the number of patients coming to our clinic. There are many requests like, 'Doctor, there is an injection that makes you lose weight immediately; I want to use it.'"
"FAKE MEDICATION CONTAINS INSULIN" Altay stated that although these medications are administered like insulin, they are not insulin, and the underground applications that label insulin pens as if they were weight loss injections put patients' health at risk. "The person thinks they are using a weight loss injection, but the fake medication contains insulin, which can seriously lower blood sugar." Altay provided the following warnings:
"IT CAN EVEN LEAD TO COMA AND DEATH" "They want to use weight loss injections due to excess weight, but they do not have diabetes, meaning their blood sugar is normal. In this case, the insulin in the fake medication can cause blood sugar to drop below normal, leading to coma and even death of the patient. It can put patients with heart failure in a situation requiring intensive care. There may be side effects related to vision. Allergic reactions may occur."
