In an incident that occurred in the town of Nowy Targ, Poland, a street lamp fell over due to the weight of a man leaning against it and landed on a passing woman. Thanks to her quick reflexes, the woman avoided serious injury. Following the incident, the municipality announced that all street lamps in the town would be inspected and necessary maintenance would be carried out.
In the small town of Nowy Targ in southern Poland, an ordinary day came to an unexpected end due to an accident. The incident occurred in the afternoon local time when a man leaning against a street lamp caused it to topple over and fall on a passing woman.
According to eyewitnesses, a man estimated to be in his 40s was talking on his phone while leaning against the street lamp in the town square. Shortly after, the lamp post, which had likely lost its stability due to wear over time or cracks in the ground, suddenly fell under the man's weight.
At that moment, 35-year-old Maria K., who was walking on the sidewalk, narrowly escaped serious injury as she was directly underneath the post. Thanks to her quick reflexes, the woman managed to jump aside at the moment of impact, but she still sustained minor abrasions on her shoulder and leg.
Emergency medical teams that arrived at the scene provided first aid to the injured woman. It was reported that Maria K.'s condition was not serious, but she was taken to the hospital as a precaution.
Nowy Targ Mayor Tomasz Nowak stated, "This unfortunate incident shows that we need to be more careful about the maintenance of urban furniture in our town. We will check all similar lamps and carry out the necessary maintenance," he said.
The local police announced that the incident was being treated as an accident, but they were investigating whether there was any negligence regarding the maintenance of the street furniture by the municipality.
The man who caused the accident reportedly went into shock and stated, "I was just leaning to talk on the phone, and suddenly I felt the post shaking."
Nowy Targ Municipality announced that all street lamps in the town would undergo an urgent safety inspection and that the aging infrastructure would be renewed.
