Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IBB) President Ekrem İmamoğlu was detained as part of investigations into terrorism, corruption, and bribery. Following İmamoğlu's detention, questions arose about what would happen to his position at IBB. TGRT News Ankara Representative Fatih Atik stated, "If İmamoğlu is removed for supporting a terrorist organization, a trustee will be appointed in his place. If it does not come from terrorism, a new CHP member can be elected from the Municipal Council."
The Mayor of Istanbul, Ekrem İmamoğlu, was detained as part of investigations into terrorism, corruption, and bribery. One of the most curious topics following İmamoğlu's detention is what will happen to his position as the Mayor of Istanbul.
Among the 106 suspects, including İmamoğlu, charges of "organized crime, extortion, bribery, fraud, and rigging a tender" have been made, and in a written statement by the Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, İmamoğlu was described as a "suspect of being the leader of an organized crime group."
"THE DETENTION PERIOD IS 4 DAYS"
Fatih Atik, TGRT News Ankara Representative, who made important statements regarding the issue, said that these developments would affect the CHP's primary election to be held on Sunday, stating, "We know that the detention period is 4 days. İmamoğlu has no chance of participating in the primary election. Even if the ballot boxes are set up, İmamoğlu will not be able to go."
"IF HE IS ARRESTED FOR TERRORISM, A TRUSTEE WILL BE APPOINTED"
Atik also answered the question, "Will a trustee be appointed?" with the following statements:
There are two investigations being conducted against İmamoğlu. One is particularly for leading an 'organized crime' group. The second is related to the PKK/KCK terrorist organization, concerning the 'City Consensus' made during the local elections and the open support given to the terrorist organization, leading to charges of aiding and abetting.
After all this, the question arises: will a trustee be appointed to the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM)? Will Ekrem İmamoğlu be removed from office? Because there is a terrorism investigation, and İmamoğlu and 7 others are accused of direct assistance to the PKK/KCK, the terrorism charges result in the removal of mayors and the appointment of trustees in their place.
This legal regulation has also passed through the Parliament. It was introduced by a decree after July 15. Subsequently, it was legalized through a legal regulation made by the Parliament. In this context, we know that many mayors have been removed from office due to direct charges of aiding terrorism.
There is also such an accusation against Ekrem İmamoğlu. He will give a statement to the prosecutor's office within the scope of this investigation. After the 4-day detention period, if İmamoğlu is arrested on charges of 'aiding terrorism' following the court he will be brought to, a trustee will be appointed to the IMM. This application has previously occurred in this manner.
"A TRUSTEE WILL NOT BE APPOINTED EXCEPT FOR TERRORISM"
As far as I know, a trustee is not appointed in the investigation where he is accused of being the 'leader of an organized crime group.' The only exception to this is terrorism charges. If an arrest comes regarding organized crime leadership, if it does not come from 'terrorism,' he will be removed from office due to the arrest warrant, but a new CHP member can be elected from the Municipal Council instead of appointing a trustee.
