A 54-year-old woman who has been suffering from health issues due to facial paralysis for 15 years in Muş has regained her health through surgery. Dr. Ömer Tarık Kavak, who stated that facial paralysis is a treatable condition, said, "We aimed to enable our patient to smile in a healthier and more natural way in the future."

Huri Melek Oruç (54), who lives in Muş, was referred to Van Regional Training and Research Hospital after not getting results from Bulanık State Hospital, where she previously went with complaints of a mass in her salivary gland. A week ago, at Van Regional Training and Research Hospital, ENT Specialist Op. Dr. Ömer Tarık Kavak conducted examinations and tests on Oruç, which revealed a mass in her salivary gland, and it was decided that she would undergo surgery.

"SHE APPLIED TO THE HOSPITAL DUE TO A MASS IN HER SALIVARY GLAND"

Op. Dr. Kavak stated that the patient, who had facial paralysis, applied to them due to a mass in her salivary gland, saying, "In the evaluations made, we determined that the patient had facial paralysis and identified that some nerves were malfunctioning and working involuntarily. We shared this situation with our patient. We informed her that both pathologies could be corrected through surgical methods."

"WE AIMED TO ENABLE HER TO SMILE HEALTHILY AND NATURALLY"

Sharing details about the operation, Kavak said, "In the operation, after removing the mass from the salivary gland, we also ensured the cancellation of the involuntarily working nerves and performed nerve transfers to correct the partial facial paralysis. Additionally, we aimed to enable our patient to smile more healthily and naturally in the future by canceling the synkinetic nerves that caused involuntary muscle movements. We were pleased that our patient's general condition was good after the operation. We will discharge her soon," he stated.

"SHE HAD GOTTEN USED TO THE FACIAL PARALYSIS"

Our patient had been experiencing facial paralysis for a long time and had complaints in this regard. However, since it had been a long time, she had gotten used to this situation. At the same time, the recently developed mass in her salivary gland led to her hospital application. In our evaluation, we assessed the patient holistically and expressed the mass in her salivary gland. We also mentioned that this was accompanied by facial paralysis," he said.

"FACIAL PARALYSIS CAN BE TREATED"

Explaining that facial paralysis can be corrected through surgical methods or medication, Op. Dr. Kavak said, "Treatment of facial paralysis can be possible with medication in the early stages. However, in later stages, surgical methods are required. Some nerve grafts or muscle transfers may be necessary. Although our patient had partial facial paralysis, we deemed nerve transfers more appropriate. Facial paralysis is a common condition. However, with early application, medication treatment is possible in most cases, except for some special situations. In the long term, some patients may accept this condition as permanent facial paralysis and may not apply to the hospital. However, facial paralysis is a treatable condition, and it is important to consult a specialist doctor in the relevant field," he stated.

"MY MOTHER HAD FACIAL PARALYSIS 15 YEARS AGO"

Şehriban Oruç, who came to the hospital with her mother, said, "My mother had facial paralysis 15 years ago. It had been ongoing permanently since that day. When we applied to Bulanık State Hospital in Muş, they told us that there was a mass in my mother's throat. They referred us to Van Regional Training and Research Hospital. When we came here, we met with Professor Hüseyin. Professor Hüseyin had said that a biopsy should be taken. After the biopsy was taken, he referred us to Dr. Ömer. She was very scared beforehand, but thankfully the surgery went well. It was a very challenging operation. My mother had facial paralysis for many years," she said.
