As purchasing power continues to decline due to high inflation towards the end of 2024, the dominance of the largest banknote in the market is also decreasing. The appreciation of the dollar, euro, and gold against the Turkish lira has reignited discussions about the introduction of new banknotes. Following the Central Bank's decision to print a new 5 TL banknote, the 500 TL banknotes are once again on the agenda. Şenol Babuşcu, former Deputy General Manager of Ziraat Bank, claimed that a new era will begin in ATMs. He stated in his announcement that low-denomination banknotes will no longer be available in ATMs. "ONLY 200 TL BANKNOTES WILL BE AVAILABLE IN ATMs"Şenol Babuşcu's statements on his social media account were as follows: Banks are now only placing 200 and 100 TL banknotes in ATMs. After the 5, 10, and 20 TL banknotes, they have also stopped placing the 50 TL banknote. Starting from the beginning of 2025, they will only place 200 TL banknotes. If this situation occurs, ATMs will have entered a new era after 18 days. This situation has raised questions about whether the 500 TL banknote will be released into the market. IN ADDITION TO 500 TL, NEW 1000 TL BANKNOTES ARE ALSO ON THE AGENDAOn the other hand, experts indicate that with the possible price increases in the new year, the currency will lose even more value, and purchasing power will further decline. They suggest that introducing new and larger denomination banknotes could be beneficial to prevent this. With the new price increases, it is commented that the significance of small banknotes such as 5 TL and 10 TL will diminish on their own. While all these situations occasionally bring new banknote claims to the agenda, it is claimed that the economic management is determined to take action this time. It is stated that new banknotes of 500 and 1000 TL will be released into the market to meet purchasing power. There are even claims that the visuals of the new banknotes have been prepared, and only the printing and release process remains.
