In the 4.9 magnitude earthquake that occurred in Kemah, Erzincan, there were no casualties or property damage, while Prof. Dr. Naci Görür emphasized that the tremor took place in a critical area close to the Yedisu zone of the North Anatolian Fault Line.
A 4.9 magnitude earthquake occurred in the Kemah district of Erzincan, which was felt in surrounding provinces, while Geoscientist Prof. Dr. Naci Görür pointed out that the earthquake took place in a critical area.
According to information on the website of the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority, a 4.9 magnitude earthquake occurred in the Kemah district of Erzincan. The earthquake, recorded at 14:16, was reported to have occurred at a depth of 4.52 kilometers. The tremor was also felt in Tunceli, Gümüşhane, Elazığ, and Bayburt.
STATEMENT FROM THE GOVERNOR'S OFFICE AND AFAD
Erzincan Governor Hamza Aydoğdu announced on his social media account that there were no casualties or property damage from the earthquake. AFAD also stated that no negative situation has been reported so far and that teams are continuing their field scanning efforts.
NACİ GÖRÜR: EARTHQUAKE IN A CRITICAL LOCATION
After the earthquake, Geoscientist Prof. Dr. Naci Görür made an assessment on his social media account, drawing attention to the region where the tremor occurred. Görür stated, "The earthquake is in a critical location," indicating that they expect an earthquake in the Yedisu zone of the North Anatolian Fault Line and noted, "This earthquake is close to that segment."
"WE EXPECT A DESTRUCTIVE EARTHQUAKE"
Prof. Dr. Süleyman Pampal stated in an interview with CNN TÜRK, "We expect a destructive earthquake in the eastern end of the section between Erzincan and Karlıova, which will reach a magnitude of 7.5. In Erzincan, towards Karlıova, that is, just east of that area, we can call it the Yedisu fault. We expect a major earthquake here in the eastern part of the North Anatolian fault, yes, and we have been waiting for years. As I said, the seismic gap has reached its recurrence period, producing a 7.4 magnitude earthquake and still has the potential to produce the same earthquake. Unfortunately, a destructive earthquake will occur. Unfortunately, this is not far in the future. This earthquake may not have triggered the expected earthquake. There is already a fault that is expected without triggering. Triggering is not very important. We saw the triggering in the February 6 earthquake. There is a connection here, but the earthquake is small. There is a fault that has accumulated energy and is waiting to break. Unfortunately, our country will experience this earthquake in the upcoming period," he said.
TWO MAJOR EARTHQUAKES HAD OCCURRED BEFORE
Erzincan is located on one of the most active earthquake belts in Turkey. The city, located on the eastern extension of the North Anatolian Fault Line, has faced destructive earthquakes throughout history. One of the biggest disasters occurred on December 27, 1939. In the earthquake, which was approximately 7.9 in magnitude, more than 32,000 people lost their lives, and nearly 100,000 buildings, including the city center, were destroyed. The 6.8 magnitude Erzincan earthquake in 1992 also caused significant loss of life and property.
