As divorce rates rise globally, an incident in Kuwait has been recorded as "the world's shortest marriage." In an event that was reported by local media and quickly became a topic of discussion, the couple divorced just a few minutes after their wedding.
After completing the marriage procedures and preparing to leave the courthouse, the couple was surprised by an incident at the exit. The groom insulted the bride by calling her "stupid," which led to a strong reaction from the bride.
ONE WORD ENDED THE MARRIAGE
After the verbal argument, the bride returned to the courthouse to request the annulment of the marriage. The judge quickly accepted the application on the grounds of "the fundamental disruption of the marriage union." Thus, the couple was divorced just minutes after the official wedding.
WHAT IS THE SITUATION IN TURKISH LAW?
While the swift decision in Kuwait draws attention, it is noted that a similar situation is theoretically possible in Turkish law as well. According to the Turkish Civil Code, there is no specific time requirement for a contested divorce case, and a lawsuit can be filed immediately after the wedding. However, for a consensual divorce, the marriage must last at least one year. Therefore, consensual divorce on the same day is not possible in Turkey.
