Former Secretary of State John Kerry stated that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had previously asked U.S. presidents to attack Iran, but only Trump accepted this request. Kerry expressed that by starting the war with Iran, Trump "fulfilled Netanyahu's long-standing dream of causing as much damage to Iran as possible."

Former U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry criticized U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to go to war with Iran and his methods for resolving the conflict on Boston Public Radio.

"IT COULD HAVE A SIGNIFICANT ECONOMIC IMPACT"

Kerry, who was the chief negotiator of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Agreement signed between the U.S. and Iran in 2015, described the two-week ceasefire reached between the two countries as "quite fragile."

Kerry stated, "This is really shocking. I think the situation is becoming more serious and dangerous as it progresses. Because the Strait of Hormuz is currently under Iran's control, which was not the case before the war began. The threat posed by the next steps that will prolong this war to global economies is chilling to even think about; it could lead to a much larger and more complex economic impact than we have faced so far."

"TRUMP REALIZED NETANYAHU'S LONG-STANDING DREAM BY STARTING THE WAR"

Kerry also emphasized that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had previously suggested a war with Iran to former U.S. presidents Joe Biden, Barack Obama, and George Bush, but all of them rejected the proposal. Kerry said, "Netanyahu had also presented plans to attack Iran during Obama's presidency. Obama rejected this plan. Other U.S. presidents, including Joe Biden and George Bush, opposed these plans as well. Trump is the only U.S. president who accepted the plan to attack Iran." Kerry expressed that Trump, by starting the war with Iran, "realized Netanyahu's long-standing dream of causing as much harm to Iran as possible."

"IRAN WAS NOT A NEAR THREAT TO THE U.S."

Kerry also emphasized that thanks to the nuclear agreement he worked on 10 years ago, Iran did not pose any near threat to the U.S. before the war began. Kerry stated, "No, there was no near threat. A near threat would be something they could do within 1 or 2 days, 3 days, 1 week, maybe 1 month. But Iran did not have such a capacity. Meanwhile, Donald Trump himself boasted that we destroyed their nuclear programs after the attacks in June 2025. Right now, the idea that they could make nuclear weapons doesn't even come to mind."

"I THINK WE HAVE NOT SEEN SUCH A GREAT DISRUPTION IN THE HISTORY OF OUR COUNTRY"

Kerry stated that negotiations are essential to end the war, while also expressing doubts about whether the Trump administration has the capacity to conduct negotiations. Kerry said, "I think there is a more significant strategic gap here than I have seen in any presidential term during my time in public life. I believe we have not seen such a great disruption in the history of our country, with the spirit of our nation, the reality of our nation, our constitution, and everything we stand for."
