It was stated that Japan's government may collaborate with Turkey to spend the $640 million allocated for coastal defense from the newly approved $58 billion defense budget. Aiming to enhance its "long-range strike" capabilities, Japan has allocated significant resources for long-range cruise missiles and unmanned aerial, maritime, and underwater vehicles.
According to a statement from the Japanese government, the draft defense budget for the fiscal year 2026 has increased by 9.4% compared to the previous year. Accordingly, the defense budget for the new year has been set at 58 billion dollars.
THEY CAN COLLABORATE WITH TURKEY
It was stated that the 640 million dollars allocated for coastal defense within this budget is planned to be spent on the deployment of large-scale unmanned aerial, surface, and underwater vehicles for surveillance and defense purposes under a system called "SHIELD" by 2028. It was noted that in the initial phase, emphasis would be placed on imports and that cooperation with Turkey could be established in this context.
FOCUS ON MISSILES AND UNMANNED SYSTEMS
Under the new budget, Japan aims to strengthen the defense of the southwestern islands and enhance its "long-range strike" capabilities. In this framework, significant resources have been allocated for long-range cruise missiles and unmanned aerial, surface, and underwater vehicles.
TYPE-12 ANTI-SHIP MISSILES ON THE AGENDA
A significant amount from the defense budget has been allocated for the development of long-range missile capacity, and in this context, it was stated that Japanese-made "Type-12 anti-ship missiles" with a range of approximately 1000 kilometers would be acquired. Parliamentary approval is required for the defense budget to come into effect by March 2026.
