Afyonkarahisar Mayor Burcu Köksal claimed that "bugs," or secret listening devices, were found in the mayor's office and the private secretariat, and the case opened following this claim has been concluded. A verdict hearing was held today for Köksal, who was tried at the Afyonkarahisar 1st Criminal Court of First Instance.
BURCU KÖKSAL ACQUITTED
During the hearing, Köksal's lawyers made their final defenses. Although the prosecution requested a conviction for Köksal, the court acquitted her.
WHAT HAPPENED?
In April 2024, CHP member Burcu Köksal claimed in a television program that secret listening devices referred to as "bugs" were found in the mayor's office and the private secretariat. Following this statement, the Afyonkarahisar Chief Public Prosecutor's Office initiated an investigation; however, on May 14, 2024, the prosecution deemed the claims "baseless" and decided not to pursue the case.
On the other hand, the then AK Party Afyonkarahisar Provincial Chairman Hüseyin Menteş filed a criminal complaint against Köksal for "fabricating a crime" and "defamation."
The first hearing held on April 24, 2025, took place at the Afyonkarahisar 1st Criminal Court of First Instance. Köksal argued that she "did not accuse anyone," did not point to a specific target against the claims, and merely shared the information she received. The court decided to hear witnesses and postponed the hearing to July 4, 2025.
In the second hearing held on July 4, 2025, Menteş's lawyers claimed that Köksal had committed defamation. Witnesses, Deputy Mayor Ömer Yıldız and Yüntaş General Manager Kemal Doğan, stated that they did not find any devices in the room, did not obtain the devices mentioned in the file, and no minutes or reports were presented. The prosecutor requested a conviction for Köksal. The court postponed the verdict hearing to September 2, 2025.
