A funeral ceremony was held at Fatih Mosque for the esteemed historian Prof. Dr. İlber Ortaylı, who passed away in a hospital in Istanbul where he was receiving treatment. After the funeral prayer, Ortaylı was bid farewell on his final journey with prayers.
A ceremony was held at Galatasaray University for historian and author Prof. Dr. İlber Ortaylı, who passed away at the age of 79 in the hospital where he was being treated in Istanbul. Following the ceremony, a funeral service was held at Fatih Mosque after the afternoon prayer.
LAST DUTY TO ORTAYLI
Ortaylı's coffin, wrapped in the Turkish flag, was brought to the mosque courtyard on the shoulders of his loved ones for the ceremony. İlber Ortaylı's daughter, Tuna Ortaylı, received condolences. The funeral prayer was attended by a large crowd.
LOVED ONES IN MOURNING
The first farewell ceremony for Ortaylı was held at Galatasaray University. Historian Prof. Dr. İlber Ortaylı, who is considered one of the most important intellectuals produced by the country, passed away on March 14 at Koç University Hospital, where he had been receiving treatment for some time. Ortaylı, who died at the age of 78, caused great sorrow in the academic world and among his loved ones.
FIRST CEREMONY AT GALATASARAY UNIVERSITY
The first ceremony for Prof. Dr. İlber Ortaylı was held at Galatasaray University, where he taught for many years and trained numerous students. Ortaylı's students, colleagues, and many academics attended the ceremony. Among those present were Prof. Dr. Celal Şengör, one of Ortaylı's closest friends, and Fatih Altaylı. During the ceremony held on the university campus, memorial speeches were made for Ortaylı, while his students and loved ones experienced great sorrow.
THE TOMB OF FATIH SULTAN MEHMET IS ALSO LOCATED THERE
The courtyard of Fatih Mosque is known as a historical area where the graves of important figures from Ottoman and Republic history are located. In the courtyard, alongside the tomb of Fatih Sultan Mehmet, there are many graves of statesmen and historians. Ortaylı is also expected to be buried here, next to his famous historian mentor Halil İnalcık.
