Experts warn that the time spent in the bathroom can pose health risks. A study conducted in the U.S. revealed that the use of smartphones, in particular, extends the time spent in the bathroom, increasing the risk of hemorrhoids by 46%. Scientists emphasize that the time spent in the bathroom should be limited to a few minutes and that individuals should stay away from digital devices.
A study conducted by Dr. Trisha Pasricha at Beth Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, USA, revealed that spending a long time in the toilet significantly increases the risk of hemorrhoids.
USING A CELL PHONE IN THE TOILET INCREASES HEMORRHOID RISK BY 46%
As part of the study, the health records and toilet habits of 125 adults who underwent colonoscopy were examined in detail. Sixty-six percent of the participants reported spending a long time in the toilet, while thirty-seven percent stated that this duration exceeded 5 minutes.
Dr. Pasricha emphasized that especially the use of smartphones in the toilet is a serious risk factor. According to the research findings, engaging with a cell phone while in the toilet – for example, texting or browsing social media – increases the risk of developing hemorrhoids by 46%.
PUTTING PRESSURE ON VEINS
Researchers noted that prolonged sitting puts pressure on the veins in the anal and rectal areas, which can damage tissues over time and lead to the formation of hemorrhoids. The study was published in the prestigious medical journal 'PLOS One.'
NOT THE ONLY RISK FACTOR
Experts state that not only phone usage but also factors such as heavy lifting, pregnancy, genetic predisposition, obesity, and aging can increase the risk of hemorrhoids.
"TOILET TIME SHOULD NOT EXCEED A FEW MINUTES, AND PHONES SHOULD NOT BE USED"
Dr. Pasricha states that smartphones have become an indispensable part of modern life, but some habits can negatively affect health. She warns, "Toilet time should not exceed a few minutes, and phones should not be used during this process."
