Technology analyst Kester Mann, speaking to the BBC, interprets this development as "the beginning of the end for physical SIM cards." According to Mann, the decision by Google and Apple in this direction is a turning point that will affect not only their product strategies but the entire mobile ecosystem. Indeed, while it is estimated that 1.3 billion devices will operate with eSIM by the end of 2024, this number is expected to exceed 3 billion by 2030.
ADVANTAGES OF eSIM
The rise of eSIM technology is greatly influenced by the practicality it offers to users. It is now possible to manage multiple mobile lines on the same phone, and especially while traveling, switching to a new operator can be done easily without the need to change physical cards.
Additionally, since there is no need for a SIM slot in devices, space is freed up in the internal hardware; this means larger batteries and longer battery life. The system also provides security advantages, offering an extra layer of protection since the SIM cannot be physically removed when the phone is stolen.
THE eSIM AGENDA IN TURKEY
Apple's model that operates solely with eSIM, the iPhone 17 Air, will also be available for sale in Turkey with this feature. However, there are some restrictions on eSIM usage in Turkey. The Information and Communication Technologies Authority (BTK) made a decision on July 10, 2025, to block access to foreign-based eSIM providers (such as Airalo, Saily, Holafly, Nomad, etc.). The reason cited was a lack of licenses and security risks. This step is seen as an important opportunity for local operators to strengthen their eSIM infrastructure.
