The International Football Association Board is preparing to introduce new rules for penalty kicks and the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system. According to the new proposal, if a player's penalty kick hits the crossbar or is saved by the goalkeeper, the play will not continue.
The International Football Association Board (IFAB) is preparing to make radical changes to the rules of football.
3 NEW RULE PROPOSALS
According to a report in The Times, IFAB has put three new rule proposals on its agenda. Two of these proposals are related to the VAR application, while the other proposal concerns the penalty rule.
GOAL KICK IF PENALTY MISSES
According to the new proposal, if a player's penalty kick hits the post or is saved by the goalkeeper, the play will no longer continue. After the shot, the player who took the penalty and their teammates will not be able to follow the play and attempt to score. If the penalty is missed, the game will stop, and a goal kick will be awarded to the other team.
VAR CAN NOW INTERVENE
The other two proposed rule changes aim to expand the authority of VAR. Accordingly, if the referee has wrongly awarded a corner kick, VAR can intervene and overturn the decision. Similarly, a second yellow card shown to a player can also be rescinded through VAR review.
