Search and rescue efforts are ongoing for 12-year-old Ahmet Erçil, who fell into the Tigris River while trying to retrieve his sandal in the Cizre district of Şırnak. The operations, which began yesterday evening, were paused due to the darkness.

In the Cizre district of Şırnak, a search and rescue operation has been initiated to find 12-year-old Ahmet Erçil, who was swept away while trying to retrieve his sandal that fell into the Tigris River. The incident occurred yesterday around 3:30 PM near the Tigris River bank in the Konak neighborhood of Cizre, close to the Cizre Bridge. According to reports, while bending down to pick up his sandal that had fallen into the water, Ahmet lost his balance and fell into the river.

SEARCHES HALTED DUE TO DARKENING WEATHER

When a citizen who entered the water to rescue Ahmet was unsuccessful, the 112 Emergency Call Center was notified. Following the report, teams from AFAD, diving teams affiliated with the Cizre Municipality, firefighters, and police were dispatched to the area. The teams conducted searches both underwater with divers and on the water's surface with boats. Due to the strong current and whirlpool structure of the Tigris River, the operations were challenging, and searches were halted as the weather darkened.

INVESTIGATION INTO THE INCIDENT CONTINUES

It was stated that the search efforts would be resumed in the morning with the participation of diving teams from the Bitlis Provincial Police Department's Tatvan Underwater Group and underwater search and rescue teams from the Diyarbakır Provincial Gendarmerie Command.

The investigation launched regarding the incident is ongoing.
