The "alcohol lock application," developed to reduce the use of alcohol while driving, which is one of the significant factors in traffic accidents, is being implemented in Turkey. So, what are the technical requirements of the application published in the Official Gazette? Details are in our news...
The regulation published in the Official Gazette regulates the administrative and technical requirements for safety systems to be used in automobiles. In this step, which is a continuation of the event data recorder systems regulation published in 2024, the standards for alcohol locks and other systems have been defined. With the determination of technical specifications, the final preparations for the installation of these devices in vehicles have also been completed.
HOW WILL THE SYSTEM WORK?
The alcohol lock works with devices that measure the alcohol level in the driver's breath. The system prevents drivers who exceed the limit from starting the vehicle. The system has different models, including versions that require blowing into a key. The regulation also includes detailed information about the type approval documents and templates for these devices.
IMPLEMENTATION TO START WITHIN THE YEAR
The new regulation is planned to be implemented in Turkey by 2025. Experts believe that if both the technological and legal infrastructure are established correctly, this system could significantly reduce traffic accidents...
EMERGENCY LANE SYSTEM ALSO IN OPERATION
In addition to the alcohol lock in vehicles, there will also be an emergency lane keeping system for drivers. This system aims to enhance safety by preventing the driver from leaving the lane.
IF ALCOHOL LEVEL IS HIGH, THE VEHICLE DOES NOT START
The alcohol lock system requires drivers to perform a breath test before starting the vehicle. The alcohol level is determined as a result of the test; if the level is above the limit, the vehicle cannot be started, and the driver is warned. This innovation is seen as an important step to prevent the use of alcohol in traffic.
COMPLIANCE WITH EU LEGISLATION ACHIEVED
In the previously published regulation, the administrative principles of intelligent speed assistance systems, driver drowsiness and attention warning systems, event data recorders, and advanced driver distraction warning systems were established. The new regulation has been prepared within the framework of compliance with European Union legislation and aims to raise safety standards in motor vehicles.
CAN THE ALCOHOL LOCK BE BYPASSED?
Although some methods to disable the alcohol lock system are frequently discussed, the advanced security measures of these systems have made it almost impossible to cheat.
Here are the most common cheating attempts and the measures taken against them:
1. Will the vehicle start if someone else blows into it?
Having someone else blow into the device to start the vehicle may seem like the easiest method at first glance, but modern alcohol locks are equipped with features to detect such attempts.
Camera System: The device can record the person blowing into it and determine that it does not match the real driver.
Random Tests During the Journey: The system detects changes by asking the driver to blow again during the drive.
Legal Penalties: If such a cheat is detected during a traffic check, the driver faces heavy fines and possible legal proceedings.
2. Is it possible to mask alcohol with onion, garlic, mint, or mouthwash?
Using mouthwash, mint, or strongly scented foods to deceive alcohol measurement devices is one of the most common misconceptions known to the public. However, modern devices:
Recognize the Chemical Composition of Alcohol: The attempt to deceive fails as the ethanol and other components in substances like onion or mint are analyzed.
Risk of Rebound: Alcohol-based mouthwashes can even cause the device to detect a higher alcohol level.
Traffic Controls Provide Extra Measures: Even if you manage to bypass the lock, the situation will be revealed in additional tests conducted at any checkpoint.
3. Will the alcohol lock work if I blow compressed air instead of breath?
This method is also impossible to work against modern devices.
Measures Breath Temperature: The alcohol lock analyzes the temperature and humidity levels of human breath. Compressed air is cold or dry, so the device cannot be deceived.
Continuous Blowing Detection: If the blowing is not done at the correct pressure and duration, the system will not start the vehicle.
4. Is it possible to remove the alcohol lock and use the vehicle?
Completely disabling the device is a method that will have serious legal consequences.
System Manipulations are Recorded: The alcohol lock is connected to the vehicle's electronic system, and any attempt to remove it is recorded.
Leads to Heavy Penalties: If it is understood that the system has been tampered with, the driver may face heavy fines and possible prison sentences.
Complicates Reuse: When the removed device needs to be reattached, additional approval and costs will be required, making it an unsustainable method.
