Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf responded to a post by U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright on social media, which stated that the U.S. Navy escorted an oil tanker through the Strait of Hormuz and that the tanker successfully passed through the strait, in a way that would anger Washington. Qalibaf said, "Did an oil tanker escorted by the U.S. Navy pass through the Strait of Hormuz? Maybe in PlayStation."
As conflicts deepen in the Middle East, tensions around the Strait of Hormuz are also escalating. The parties are making consecutive statements regarding the Strait of Hormuz.
Commander Alireza Tengsiri of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy stated in a statement that no ship connected to attacks on Iran will be allowed to pass through the Strait of Hormuz.
Tengsiri said, "No ship connected to those attacking Iran has the right to pass through the Strait of Hormuz. If you have doubts, come closer and try."
HARSH WARNING FROM TRUMP
In response to claims that Iran has begun laying mines in the Strait of Hormuz, U.S. President Donald Trump also made a statement on the matter. Trump warned the Tehran administration, saying, "If mines are laid for any reason and are not removed immediately, the military consequences for Iran will be at an unprecedented level."
FIRST SHARED, THEN DELETED
One of the most notable events of the day was U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright's announcement on social media that the U.S. Navy escorted a tanker through the Strait of Hormuz and that the tanker successfully passed through the strait. The U.S. Secretary deleted the post shortly after.
Officials speaking to the U.S. press, who wished to remain anonymous, denied Wright's claim, while a statement regarding the issue came from Iran.
GALIBAF'S REFERENCE TO PLAYSTATION
During the rising tensions, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf made a dismissive statement regarding claims that the U.S. Navy was escorting oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz.
Qalibaf said, "Did an oil tanker escorted by the U.S. Navy pass through the Strait of Hormuz? Maybe in PlayStation."
