Attack with an axe on a US military plane in Ireland

Shannon Airport, which holds strategic importance in Ireland, became the scene of an international security crisis. An unidentified assailant climbed onto a U.S. Air Force C-130 military transport aircraft on the runway with an axe, causing damage and revealing security vulnerabilities at the airport. While security forces attempted to bring a ladder to subdue the assailant, significant damage occurred to the aircraft; both airport traffic was halted and the incident ignited the fuse of a diplomatic crisis.

Shannon Airport in Ireland was the scene of an attack reminiscent of movies in the morning hours. A man in his 40s, whose identity has not yet been revealed, entered the airport's highly secure restricted area and attacked a parked C-130 Hercules transport aircraft belonging to the U.S. Air Force on the runway.

CLIMBING ON THE AIRPLANE'S WING AND SWINGING AN AXE

According to eyewitness accounts and footage shared on social media, the attacker climbed onto the wing of the aircraft and struck the fuselage and wings multiple times with the axe in his hand. The most striking aspect of the incident was the response process of the security forces. To bring down the attacker who was on top of the aircraft, teams had to bring a portable ladder to the scene. During this time, the attacker caused significant damage to the aircraft's fuselage.

FLIGHT OPERATIONS AT THE AIRPORT SUSPENDED

As a result of the incident, all flights at Shannon Airport were suspended for approximately 25 minutes. Airport police and personnel from the Irish Defense Forces conducted an operation to neutralize the individual.

INVESTIGATION CONTINUES: HOW DID HE GET IN?

The Irish police, Garda, announced that the attacker was arrested under the 1984 Criminal Justice Act and that the interrogation is ongoing. However, the biggest question mark still remains unanswered:

How did a civilian with an axe gain such easy access to an area protected by heavy weapons and containing a military aircraft belonging to a foreign state?

A MEETING POINT FOR ANTI-WAR ACTIVISTS

Shannon Airport has long been a site of protests by anti-war activists, as it is frequently used for refueling and resting by U.S. military aircraft. However, this type of "axe attack" of this magnitude has been recorded as one of the most serious security breaches in the airport's history.
