A young TikTok phenomenon in Mexico, along with her husband and two children, was found dead in their pickup truck. It is believed that there is a cartel connection behind the murder.
32-year-old Esmeralda Ferrer Garibay, her 36-year-old husband Roberto Carlos Gil Licea, their 13-year-old son Gael Santiago, and their 7-year-old daughter Regina were found murdered inside an abandoned vehicle in Guadalajara.
It was learned that the family had recently moved from Michoacán for work. Authorities believe that the murder was not due to Esmeralda's TikTok posts, but rather because of her husband's car trading and agricultural business.
The police traced the pickup truck to a repair shop. Blood stains and ballistic evidence found there revealed that the family had been killed at that location.
Two people were detained in connection with the incident but were released due to lack of evidence. One of those released was kidnapped by armed individuals while leaving the courthouse.
Esmeralda had 18,000 followers on TikTok and was known for sharing her luxurious lifestyle. Her videos featured branded clothing, luxury cars, vacation footage, and songs that often praised cartels.
Her last video was shared on August 7 and was viewed over 100,000 times. Some of her videos had exceeded 600,000 views.
Guadalajara: A city in the shadow of violence

The city is known as the center of the CJNG cartel, one of the most powerful criminal organizations in the world. Kidnappings, executions, and disappearances have become a part of daily life.
Esmeralda and her family also became victims of this violence.
