The Mayor of Esenyurt, Ahmet Özer, was arrested as part of a terrorism investigation. Can Aksoy, the Deputy Governor of Istanbul, has been appointed in place of Özer. Following Özer's arrest and the appointment of a trustee, the CHP held a rally in Esenyurt. The mayors of Ankara, Bolu, and Afyonkarahisar, Mansur Yavaş, Tanju Özcan, and Burcu Köksal, did not attend the rally. The absence of the three mayors in Esenyurt became a topic of discussion. Most recently, the debate between Cemal Enginyurt, the Deputy Chairman of the Democratic Party and Istanbul MP, and Gamze Taşcıer, the Deputy Chairman of the CHP and Ankara MP, about Ahmet Özer was widely discussed on Sözcü TV. "DID YOU ASK ME WHEN YOU NOMINATED AHMET ÖZER?"Enginyurt, who was angered by Taşcıer’s statement, "Aren't you against trustees? Could this be an invitation to the struggle for democracy?" responded, "Did you ask me when you nominated Ahmet Özer?" Enginyurt continued his reaction: "It was stated before the election who Ahmet Özer is. It was said not to nominate him. Your mayors who did not come to the rally are saying a lot. Please read the reasons for your mayors' absence sincerely. At least listen to Tanju Özcan, that’s enough."
