During Sweden's NATO membership process in 2022, a serious security breach was revealed. According to the Dagens Nyheter newspaper, secret documents prepared after Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson's visit to Ankara in November 2022 were forgotten in a restroom at Stockholm Arlanda Airport.
A FILE REGARDING NATO NEGOTIATIONS WAS FOUND
A copy of the file prepared after Kristersson's meeting with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan was found by a cleaning staff member at the airport. It was stated that the documents contained sensitive information regarding NATO negotiations with Turkey and were accessible to unauthorized individuals for a period of time. It is unknown how long the file was missing.
"NOT SENSITIVE INFORMATION" STATEMENT
While the Prime Minister's Office confirmed the incident, Security Agency Director Fredrik Agemark stated that the examination found "no information classified as security" in the file. However, Swedish media reported that some of the documents fell under confidentiality and were of a sensitive nature. It was noted that the file was one of the information folders prepared for the prime minister, containing background notes and speech topics.
CONSECUTIVE SECURITY BREACHES BY THE NEW ADVISOR
Following the scandal, it was revealed that Henrik Landerholm, who was appointed as the national security advisor after Kristersson's visit, had committed three separate security breaches in the first six months of his duty. Landerholm, who forgot his mobile phone, notebook, and documents, was reported to have recently appeared in court for neglecting the secret documents.
