A young girl in Ağrı, who cannot walk due to burns on her abdomen and legs caused by the explosion of a hot water bottle she placed on her stomach to relieve her pain, is undergoing treatment in the hospital and is unable to recover from the effects of the unfortunate incident. She is waiting hopefully for the day she will heal. Experts warn citizens to be cautious, stating that hot water bottles older than 2 years carry a risk of explosion and leakage.

19-year-old Gamze Kaya, who lives in Ağrı, filled a hot water bottle with water she boiled at home and placed it on her aching stomach 5 days ago. After a while, Kaya felt a burning sensation in her stomach and wanted to remove the hot water bottle.

HER BELLY AND TWO LEGS WERE BURNED WHEN IT BURST

At that moment, the bag suddenly burst, spilling the water down from her stomach, burning Kaya's belly and two legs. Kaya was taken to Ağrı Training and Research Hospital by ambulance, and after the intervention at the hospital, she was referred to the Burn Treatment Center of Erzurum City Hospital. Currently undergoing treatment here and unable to recover from the effects of the unfortunate incident, Kaya is hopefully waiting for the day she will heal.

"I REGRET A LOT, I WISH I HADN'T DONE IT"

Gamze Kaya stated that she wanted to relieve her stomach pain with a hot water bottle, saying, "When my pain was too much, I wanted to try the hot water bottle, I regret it a lot, I wish I hadn't done it." Kaya mentioned that the bursting hot water bottle might have been worn out and thin due to excessive use. Stating that the hot water bottle was good for stomach pain, Kaya continued: "The water was very hot; as soon as I placed the bag, my stomach and body burned. If I had known it would be like this, I would never have used the hot water bottle. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. Then such accidents happen. Don't risk your life."

"I BURNED, DON'T YOU BURN"

Kaya, who expressed her satisfaction with the hospital service, doctors, and staff, said, "My legs and belly were burned; worse places could have burned too. I can't walk, I can't go to my work, I can't go outside, I have been very negatively affected. I burned, don't you burn."

Father Ramazan Kaya expressed his deep sadness over the unfortunate incident that happened to his daughter, saying, "Our child burned; may others not burn. People should not use such things."

BE CAREFUL WITH HOT WATER BOTTLES OLDER THAN 2 YEARS

Emre Nohutçu, one of the doctors at the Burn Treatment Center, stated that they are closely monitoring Kaya, who has second-degree deep burns on her body, and that her treatment will continue for a while. Nohutçu expressed that hot water bottles older than 2 years carry a risk of bursting and leaking, explaining that the flower symbol on the bags indicates exactly when they were produced, and the number in the middle of the symbol shows the year the bag was made.

"WE SHOULD NOT USE IT IF IT IS VERY OLD AND EXPIRED"

Nohutçu noted that many cases like this come in particularly during the winter months, stating: "When you put hot water in a very old and long-used bag, it can burst due to the expansion of the plastic or pressure applied when lying on the bag. Attention should also be paid to the cap; if it is not closed properly, it can cause bursting. When such situations result in bursting, serious burns occur. We must pay attention to the date of hot water bottles; if they are very old and expired, we should not use them, and if possible, we should not use them at all. Wound healing and treatment time can be prolonged. This winter, we treated 5 patients due to hot water bottle bursts."
