After the 3.5 magnitude earthquake that occurred in Ankara yesterday, cracks formed in the Kanuni neighborhood, which is part of the district. Residents of the neighborhood, which is also a landslide area, demanded that authorities take urgent measures.
It was claimed that after the 3.5 magnitude earthquake centered in the Yenimahalle district on Wednesday afternoon, new cracks and fissures were observed in the ground in areas around the Kanuni neighborhood that are at risk of landslides.
CRACKS INCREASED AFTER THE EARTHQUAKE
Residents expressed that the cracks became more pronounced after the earthquake and that the ground shifted in some places, stating that their safety was at risk and calling for urgent measures from the authorities.
Ümit Karabacak, who expressed that he was afraid to go down to the area after the earthquake, said, "There were serious movements in the ground in the days before the earthquake. There was visible sliding and you could hear it as well. We were very disturbed by the region. There were also breakages after the earthquake. There is a distance of 7-8 meters between my building and the sliding. AFAD has taken the information of the buildings here. As soon as there is a crack in the road, our houses will be evacuated. If there had been serious shaking during the earthquake, our houses would have been gone," he said.
"WE ARE ON EDGE"
Faruk Özer, who reported that the sliding is increasing daily, said, "The sliding happens daily. We sit on edge every day. As residents of the neighborhood, we are anxious. After the increasing slides every day, we don’t know what to do," he said.
LANDSLIDE AREAS ARE BEING FILLED
In areas at risk of landslides, teams from Ankara Metropolitan Municipality have been working for a long time to prevent soil erosion. The municipal teams continue to carry out filling and reinforcement works, especially to minimize soil erosion in sloped areas.
