A field located between the apartment buildings in the Sarıçam district of Adana has continued to be preserved as agricultural land due to its owner's resistance against contractors. The land, where potatoes are grown, also receives significant support from the local residents.
A field located between the apartments in the Mehmet Akif Ersoy Neighborhood of the Sarıçam district in Adana has not been given to contractors by its owner for years.
FARMING IN THE MIDST OF CONCRETE
The last crop planted in the field, which stands alone in an area where residential buildings are rising, was potatoes. The landowner's decision not to sell the land has received support from the neighborhood residents.
"THE LAND MUST BE PROTECTED"
Neighborhood resident Fatoş Hayta stated that the land must be protected, saying, "If you are asking whether there should be a concrete pile instead of the field, I don't think so. We no longer have anything to breathe. The landowner's decision not to sell this place is very correct. Of course, apartments are necessary, but we also need land. Over time, we will need this land much more. That’s why it needs to be protected. Whoever the owner is, please do not sell it," she said.
"THEY ARE BUILDING EVERYWHERE THEY FIND"
Ahmet Demir, recalling the recent earthquake, expressed: "We just experienced an earthquake. They are building everywhere they find. At this rate, our end is not good. The landowner has planted potatoes here; he is doing the right thing. We need to produce. But we have turned into a consumption country. No one can tell the landowner to 'sell this place.' As a society, we have become accustomed to consumption, so producing people remain in the minority."
"SOCIAL FACILITIES CAN BE BUILT"
Local resident Süllü Totuş suggested that the field could be evaluated as a public area, stating, "The municipality can expropriate this place and create social facilities for the public. It doesn't necessarily have to be a building. If it is not open for housing, a green area can be created. A sports facility and a resting area for retirees can be established."
