Mersin University (MEU) prepared the project "The Silence of the Whale is Turning into Science" to contribute the skeleton of the fin whale, which was washed ashore 4 years ago and buried in the garden of the Newşehir Campus, to scientific studies.

14 METERS LONG

Under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Deniz Ayas, a faculty member of the Processing Technology Department of MEU's Faculty of Fisheries, excavation work will be carried out in the area where the whale was buried from October 1 to 8. At the end of the study, in which students can participate by filling out forms, the 14-meter-long skeleton will be taken to the MEU Marine Life Museum.

DEAD DUE TO COLLISION WITH A MARINE VEHICLE

Deniz Ayas stated that they performed a necropsy (examination of animal carcasses) on the whale that washed ashore on May 13, 2021, at Adnan Menderes Boulevard. Ayas mentioned that they determined the whale died as a result of a collision with a marine vehicle during the examination, and they found significant damage to the internal organs of the marine creature after the accident.

"WE WANT OUR STUDENTS TO WITNESS THIS HISTORICAL EVENT"

Ayas expressed that the skeleton of the whale was kept underground after the necropsy to contribute to scientific research, saying: "The fin whale is the second largest creature in the world after the blue whale. The excavation of this whale's skeleton is a unique historical event. We want our students to witness this historical event and participate in the adventure. Our work will consist of 3 phases. In the first phase, the skull and jaw bones will be removed, followed by the vertebrae and ribs in the chest area. Finally, the tail vertebrae will be removed, and all stages will be numbered. Each vertebra, rib, and jawbone here will provide us with scientific findings related to the history of whales that are millions of years old."

"IT WILL BE THE MOST STRIKING, BEAUTIFUL MATERIAL OF OUR MUSEUM"

Prof. Dr. Ayas stated that after the assembly process, the skeleton will be exhibited at the MEU Marine Life Museum to raise awareness for scientific research and the conservation of marine life, saying, "The fin whale will be the most striking, beautiful material of our museum. We want to excavate the skeleton as soon as possible and share it with students and citizens."
