At the extraordinary general assembly of Gençlerbirliği held in Ankara, discussions between the current president Mehmet Kaya and his rival Çağrı Çetin escalated into a fight. Following the incidents, the congress was temporarily suspended.
During the Extraordinary General Assembly of Gençlerbirliği held at ATO Congresium in Ankara, a fight broke out. Tensions rose during the speech of the current President Mehmet Kaya, who was competing against Çağrı Çetin in the general assembly.
POLICE INTERVENED
The discussions in the hall escalated into a fight. Those involved in the brawl were removed from the hall by the Ankara Sports Branch police present. After the incidents, a 10-minute break was given to the congress. Later, Mehmet Kaya returned to the podium and announced that he was withdrawing from the presidential candidacy.
''I AM WITHDRAWING FROM THE PRESIDENCY CANDIDACY''
Kaya stated, "This is not a place for fighting. The name of Gençlerbirliği is unity, but there is no unity here." He continued, "First of all, I would like to thank my family who have always been by my side and supported me. The board members never left me alone; they contributed as much as they could, both materially and morally. Gençlerbirliği is a great club, but there are many who struggle, go to court, and talk on internet channels at night. They have become candidates today. I am withdrawing from the presidential candidacy."
After Kaya's withdrawal from candidacy, another scuffle occurred in the hall, and the general assembly was interrupted once again. Osman Sungur, who was elected president in the general assembly in June, had resigned from his position on October 7 due to health issues and personal reasons. The board of directors had unanimously appointed Mehmet Kaya as president in a meeting held on October 8.
