A massive tree fungus, accidentally discovered by hunters in the forested area of Araklı district in Trabzon, is astonishing those who see it. The find, which experts say is one of the largest tree fungus specimens encountered in the region so far, also holds significant economic potential.
Gökhan Özbay, who went hunting in a high-altitude village in the Araklı district of Trabzon, encountered an unusual sight in the forested area.
ENORMOUS SIZES
Özbay photographed the burl, which almost completely enveloped the trunk of a tree, with his cell phone. It was observed that the sphere, which astonished onlookers, had reached enormous dimensions.
THE TREE'S STRUGGLE FOR SURVIVAL
In our country, especially in the Black Sea region (Artvin, Rize, Trabzon) and the Taurus Mountains, the tree burl, scientifically named 'Burl', is found on old walnut and chestnut trees and is defined as a struggle for survival that the tree engages in against external factors. This mass forms as the tree uncontrollably grows its cells to protect itself against bacteria, fungi, or physical injuries.
WORTH ITS WEIGHT IN GOLD
This enormous mass in Araklı is not only a biological curiosity but also carries great economic potential. These types of burl structures are considered worth their weight in gold in luxury furniture and automotive interior design due to the complex and aesthetic patterns (figures) that emerge when they are cut.
