In the Mazıdağı district of Mardin, a person who attempted to kill his father by setting a bomb trap in his father's vehicle to claim his inheritance, along with three friends who assisted him, appeared before the judge. Polat E. claimed that he had prepared a sound bomb to scare his father, while the father stated that he did not file a complaint against the defendants.
In the Karşıyaka neighborhood of the Mazıdağı district in Mardin, Polat E., who harbored hatred against his brother R.E. due to alleged mistreatment, conspired with his friend Abas A. to kill his father Mehmet E. in order to receive a share of the inheritance.
PLACED A BOMB IN HIS FATHER'S VEHICLE TO GET A SHARE OF THE INHERITANCE
On June 30, 2024, an incident occurred where a bomb device set up by Berkant K. was placed in Mehmet E.'s service vehicle by Baran A. Mehmet E. noticed the device after becoming suspicious of a bag and left it in an abandoned building. Berkant K. later attempted to detonate the device remotely. The explosion occurred just as Mehmet E. was about to enter his residence. There were no casualties or injuries in the incident. In the investigation initiated after the explosion, Polat E. and his friends Abas A., Baran A., and Berkant K. were detained and arrested.
INDICTMENT COMPLETED
An indictment was prepared by the Mazıdağı Chief Public Prosecutor's Office against the suspects. The indictment stated that Polat E. harbored hatred towards his brother R.E. due to alleged mistreatment, decided to kill his father to inherit, and that Abas A. supported this by providing dynamite, Baran A. placed the bomb in the vehicle, and Berkant K. assisted in the crime by setting up the remote-controlled device.
“THEY DID NOT KNOW THE DEVICE WAS LEFT IN AN ABANDONED BUILDING”
The indictment stated, "Victim Mehmet E. left his residence and got into his vehicle around 23:05. After 2 minutes, he got out of the vehicle with a bag and went back to his residence. Mehmet E. exited the residence with the bag and left it in the abandoned building across from his vehicle. He then got back into his vehicle and left the scene. The vehicle with the suspects left the scene and followed the victim. During this time, it was determined that the suspects did not know that the victim had noticed the bag containing the bomb and left it in the abandoned building, so they waited at all the stops the victim would pass. At all stops, they attempted to execute the act by pressing the remote they had with them, but after no explosion occurred, suspect Polat E. dropped the other suspects Baran A. and Abas A. at their homes and went to his own home. Around 00:30, Mehmet E. returned home with his vehicle and got out of the parked vehicle. When Polat E. noticed his father had arrived, an explosion occurred in the abandoned building where the bomb was left as he pressed the remote. The act attributed to the suspects remained at the attempt stage due to the last-minute notice of the bag containing the bomb and its placement in the abandoned building. The act of the suspects Polat E., Abas A., Baran A., and Berkant K. leaving a bomb in the victim's vehicle with the intent to kill constitutes 'Attempted murder.' It was understood that the suspects committed the crime of 'Possession or transfer of dangerous substances without permission' by purchasing and possessing the explosive material used in making the bomb. It is requested that the suspects be tried and punished according to the relevant articles of law that correspond to their actions in the name of the public," the statement read.
FIRST HEARING HELD
The indictment was accepted by the 5th Heavy Criminal Court. A case was opened against the suspects for 'Attempted murder' and 'Possession or transfer of dangerous substances without permission,' seeking prison sentences ranging from 18 to 29 years. The first hearing of the case was held today at the 5th Heavy Criminal Court. During the hearing, detained Polat E. was present in the courtroom, while Abas A., Baran A., and Berkant K. participated via the Audio and Visual Information System (SEGBİS) from the prisons where they were held. Additionally, victim father Mehmet E. was also present at the hearing.
“MY INTENTION WAS NOT TO KILL, I JUST WANTED TO SCARE AND DAMAGE HIS PROPERTY”
During the hearing, which began with identity verification, Abas A., Baran A., and Berkant K. stated that they were reiterating their statements given to the police. Suspect Polat E. claimed in his defense that he did not plan to kill his father, but only had a sound bomb prepared to scare him, stating that his intention was to damage his father's property, saying, "They placed the device, which I thought was a sound bomb, in a bag inside the minibus. Since I sometimes argued with my father and thought he sided with my brother, I wanted to scare him. My intention was never to kill, I just wanted to scare and damage his property."
Suspect Abas A. added in his defense that Polat E. constantly told him about his situation at home and that he did not do the incident for money.
HE DID NOT FILE A COMPLAINT AGAINST HIS SON AND 3 FRIENDS
The defense attorneys of the suspects requested their release, considering that their clients had been detained for 15 months. Father Mehmet E. stated that after getting into the minibus, he saw the bag, noticed the light inside it, took it, and placed it in a safe place, and that it exploded later. He stated that he knew the device was prepared to scare him and that he did not file a complaint.
HEARING ADJOURNED
The prosecution stated at this stage that judicial measures would be insufficient and therefore expressed the opinion that the detention of the suspects should continue. The court panel decided to continue the detention of the suspects after a short recess and adjourned the hearing to November 14.
