The Beryl Hurricane, which affected Union Island in the Caribbean, caused a major disaster on the island. Almost all buildings were destroyed or heavily damaged. Katrina Coy, who has been living on the island since 1985, emphasized that the Beryl Hurricane brought much greater devastation. During this crisis period, with electricity and communication still intermittent, messages can only be sent by connecting to the Starlink network launched by Elon Musk's SpaceX company.

Hurricane Beryl brought a great disaster for people like Katrina Coy as it passed over Union Island. Almost all buildings on this island located off the coast of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines were either destroyed or severely damaged.

EVERYONE BECAME HOMELESS

In a video message, Katrina Coy expressed that the island became terrifying with the passage of Beryl and almost everyone became homeless. Despite experiencing Hurricane Ivan in 2004, which she has been living on the island since 1985, she emphasized that Hurricane Beryl brought much greater devastation. She and her family expressed a great fear in the shelter due to the intensity of the hurricane.

Katrina's cousin Alizee described the horror they experienced at the hotel they run with their family as Beryl passed over the town. She said they had to push the furniture against the doors and windows due to the constantly blowing strong winds. Beehives disappeared, and finding water and food became a major problem for the island's residents.

NO ELECTRICITY

During this crisis period, electricity and communication are still intermittent, and messages can only be sent by connecting to the Starlink network launched by Elon Musk's SpaceX company. The government of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines stated that it is aware of the magnitude of the problems. Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves said that the country is experiencing great pain and suffering and emphasized that the hurricane left behind immense destruction.

Katrina Coy, Director of the Union Island Environmental Alliance, made an urgent request for assistance from the Caribbean diaspora. She said, "Emergency kits, food, evacuation - they are all very important right now."

Beryl made landfall on Monday as a Category 4 hurricane with winds of 240 km/h. Thousands of people are still without electricity, and most are in temporary shelters in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada, and Saint Lucia. However, despite the chaos and homelessness throughout the island, Sebastian Sailly expressed that being alive is valuable.
