A lawyer in India threw a shoe at the Chief Justice of India, whom he alleged had insulted Hinduism. The shoe did not hit the Chief Justice, and the 71-year-old lawyer has been suspended from his profession.

An attorney in India threw a shoe at Chief Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai, claiming that he had made derogatory remarks about Hinduism in a previous case.

THREW A SPORTS SHOE AT THE CHIEF JUSTICE IN COURT

According to a report by The Indian Express, a hearing at the Supreme Court of India yesterday morning was briefly interrupted. Rakesh Kishore, an attorney present in the courtroom, threw a sports shoe at Gavai, who was listening to another speaker at the time.

REASON: DEROGATORY REMARKS TOWARDS HINDUISM

The police reported that Kishore stated during questioning that he was angered by remarks made by Chief Justice Gavai in another hearing. According to police findings, Kishore found some statements made by Gavai in a hearing regarding the rejection of the reconstruction of a statue of Lord Vishnu, one of the deities of Hinduism, at a temple in the country to be derogatory towards Hinduism.

SHOE MISSED ITS TARGET

Chief Justice Gavai said that the thrown shoe did not hit him or his desk and that he wanted the hearing to continue immediately after the incident. The police released Kishore and returned his shoe after Gavai did not file a complaint.

SUSPENDED FROM PRACTICE

Meanwhile, the bar association to which Kishore belongs announced that the 71-year-old attorney was suspended from practice for violating court rules.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his appreciation for Chief Justice Gavai's demeanor in response to the incident in a post on the social media platform of the U.S.-based company X.
