A baby weighing 3.2 kilograms, born on November 5 in Fatih, Istanbul, died of starvation 55 days later. It was determined that the 2-month-old baby was not fed, and the mother, father, grandmother, and grandfather were arrested. A neighbor speaking about the incident that shocked Turkey's conscience said, "The baby's face was completely white. They live one floor below me, but I didn't hear any crying. From what I've heard, men were coming in and out of the house."
On December 30 in Fatih, a woman named Y.Y. called the 112 Emergency Call Center to report that her 2-month-old baby was not breathing and was unresponsive. Upon the notification, health teams dispatched to the home determined that the baby had passed away. In the investigation initiated due to the suspicious nature of the baby's death, it was learned that the baby was born on November 5 at Istanbul Training and Research Hospital weighing 3.2 kilograms and was discharged on November 7. It was found that the baby, who died 55 days after birth, had dropped to a weight of 2 kilograms and had a sunken abdomen.
SAID SHE HAD NOT FED THE BABY FOR 3 DAYS
Investigations revealed that the mother called 112 approximately 12 hours after the baby's death, stated that she had not fed the baby for the last 3 days, and that family members had given contradictory statements. Following this, Y.Y., who was living with B.Y. without marriage and was identified as the baby's father, along with grandmother A.Y. and grandfather Y.E.Y., who lived in the same house, were arrested. It was learned that an investigation was ongoing regarding the four suspects for the crime of 'intentional killing.'
"THE BABY'S FACE WAS AS WHITE AS A SHEET"
Building resident Gündüz Karabıyık stated, "Around 21:00, an ambulance arrived at the door. When I looked out the window, I saw three people coming out. They had a baby in their hands. The baby's face was already as white as a sheet. An hour later, the guards arrived. Half an hour later, the police came. They asked if I could give a statement, and of course, I said yes. I know them; they have been here for about 10 years, but I just say hello when they come and go. I saw the girl for the first time last night. But the manager knew that the girl was living here. She was living with her grandmother, and when the grandmother got sick, they took their daughter in. From what I heard, men were coming in and out of the house. I thought they were guests. I wondered if something happened that an ambulance came. They live one floor below me, but I didn't hear any crying or anything,' he expressed.
4 SUSPECTS ARRESTED
After their procedures at the police station, the suspects were sent to the courthouse and were arrested by the court and sent to prison.
