A new era has begun in municipal governance in New York. The city's first Muslim Mayor, Zohran Mamdani, immediately after taking office, annulled some controversial decisions made during the tenure of his predecessor, Eric Adams. Among the repealed regulations were decrees issued in support of Israel.
New York's first Muslim Mayor Zohran Mamdani canceled some of the decrees signed by former Mayor Eric Adams in support of Israel on his first day in office.
DECISION MADE IMMEDIATELY AFTER TAKING OFFICE
According to a report by The New York Times, Mamdani, who took office yesterday after taking an oath, took swift action against some decisions made during the previous administration. With the decree he signed, Mamdani invalidated all decrees enacted by Eric Adams starting from September 2024.
DECISIONS SUPPORTING ISRAEL ALSO CANCELED
Among the canceled regulations were decrees that Adams used his authority to support Israel. One of these was a decree signed last month that prohibited city agencies from boycotting Israel or withdrawing investments from Israel.
DEFINITION OF "ANTISEMITISM" EXPANDED
Another decree signed by Adams in June 2025 aimed to expand the definition of antisemitism, including certain types of criticism against Israel within this definition. This regulation was also among the decisions canceled by Mamdani.
NEW YORK'S YOUNGEST AND FIRST MUSLIM MAYOR
34-year-old Zohran Mamdani, born in Uganda, became the youngest and first Muslim mayor in the last century to lead the largest city in the United States, according to the unofficial results of the elections held on November 4.
TOOK OATH ON THE QUR'AN
Mamdani officially took office as New York's first Muslim Mayor yesterday in a public ceremony attended by thousands of New Yorkers, taking an oath on the Qur'an.
