The Banking Regulation and Supervision Agency (BDDK) has made NFC authentication mandatory for large money transfers and certain banking transactions between 22:00 and 06:00 in response to increasing fraud cases. Users without NFC capability will have to connect to banks via video call to provide approval in order to carry out transactions during these hours.
The Banking Regulation and Supervision Agency (BRSA) has sent a new directive to banks in response to the increasing cases of fraud. With the new regulation, an additional security measure has been introduced for many banking transactions that will take place during the night hours.
RESTRICTION BETWEEN 22:00–06:00
According to the announcements published on the banks' websites, NFC approval will be mandatory for transactions such as large money transfers, cash advances, and online shopping that are carried out between 22:00 and 06:00. Especially for money transfers of 20,000 TL and above, identity card and NFC verification will be required.
Here are the transactions that will require NFC-enabled phones after 22:00:
THOSE WITHOUT NFC WILL CONNECT VISUALLY
Users who do not have NFC capability on their phones will have to connect visually to the banks' customer services to verify their identity if they wish to carry out transactions during these hours.
THE AIM IS TO PREVENT FRAUD
According to police reports, a significant portion of fraud cases occurs during the night hours. It is noted that security vulnerabilities are exploited during this time when account holders are generally asleep. It is stated that the BRSA aims to reduce the risk of fraud by creating an additional security layer for night transactions with the new application. The new regulation will particularly affect users of older model phones that do not have NFC capability directly.
