A 32-year-old patient undergoing treatment for alcohol addiction in Cologne caused the death of a 75-year-old patient in intensive care by removing their ventilator. An investigation has been launched regarding the incident, and the suspect has been taken into custody.
A terrible murder occurred in the intensive care unit of a hospital in the city of Cologne, located in the North Rhine-Westphalia state of Germany.
75-YEAR-OLD PATIENT'S RESPIRATOR DISCONNECTED
In a statement made by the Cologne Prosecutor's Office and police, it was reported that a 32-year-old patient undergoing treatment for alcohol addiction in a hospital in Cologne disconnected the respirator of a 75-year-old patient with whom he was sharing the intensive care room. Security personnel at the hospital, noticing the incident, detained the 32-year-old patient. Despite all the intervention from the medical staff, the 75-year-old patient could not be saved.
INVESTIGATION INITIATED
Following the incident that occurred last Saturday night, the Cologne police launched an investigation on suspicion of murder. By the prosecutor's decision, the 32-year-old suspect was initially transferred to a hospital where drug treatment is provided.
"AWARENESS OF RESPONSIBILITY" SUSPECT
According to the prosecutor's office, it is considered that the suspect may have committed the alleged crime during a period when his awareness of responsibility was diminished due to alcohol addiction. It was reported that the investigation regarding the incident is ongoing.
