The dust transport coming from the Sahara Desert and affecting Istanbul will be effective in the Marmara Region until Sunday.

Professor Dr. Hüseyin Toros, a faculty member of the Climate Science and Meteorology Engineering Department at Istanbul Technical University (ITU), stated that the desert dust transported from Africa is affecting Istanbul and that the system will leave the Marmara Region on Sunday.

DESERT DUST WILL BE EFFECTIVE IN SOUTHERN TURKEY ON SUNDAY

Toros mentioned that dust clouds transported from the Sahara Desert have reached Turkey. He reported that the desert dust transported from the Sahara is also showing its effects in Istanbul due to the low-pressure system over the Central Mediterranean, stating, "The dust transport from Africa, originating from the Sahara, reached Istanbul last night. With the rain, the desert dust is affecting Istanbul today. Its effects will decrease tomorrow and the day after. As of Sunday, the system will leave the Marmara Region. The desert dust will head towards southern Turkey on Sunday."

IT REDUCES AIR QUALITY

Professor Dr. Toros expressed that the desert dust consists of fine dust particles suspended in the air, and this situation could negatively affect air quality.

Stating that desert dust is a natural meteorological event and that such transports are frequently observed in the spring months, Toros explained that on days with dust transport, a hazy appearance in the sky may occasionally occur.

Toros noted that the dust transport experienced with the rain could also create a situation known as "mud rain."
