In Gaziantep, an important center for pistachio production, a father and son who want to promote alternative production have created a vineyard on 12 decares of land using a trellis system over the years of hard work. Metin and Yakup Ok have started to harvest approximately 20 tons of produce from their 12-decare vineyard, setting an example for other producers in the area.
In Gaziantep's agricultural production, grapes hold an important place alongside pistachios and olives, and with the use of modern production techniques, they have started to provide more profit to their producers. In Gaziantep, which is a significant center for viticulture, especially in the İslahiye region, example gardens created in different places with the trellis training system have increased both yield and quality in production.
FATHER AND SON TURNED TO ALTERNATIVE PRODUCTION
In Gaziantep, known for its pistachio production, farmer Metin Ok and his son Yakup Ok, who want to popularize the cultivation of alternative products, switched to the trellis training system to make the traditionally produced grape vineyards more efficient and to increase grape production. In Gaziantep, where grape vineyards are rapidly declining, Metin Ok and Yakup Ok established a trellis system in their 12-decare garden in the rural Bedirkent neighborhood of Şehitkamil district to grow healthier and higher quality grapes. In the gastronomic city of Gaziantep, they are cultivating grape varieties such as "Hönüsü," "Horoz Karası," and "Dökülgen" using modern methods to develop viticulture and grow healthier and higher quality grapes.
THEY HARVESTED 20 TONS FROM 12 DECARES
Metin Ok, who decided to convert their 12-decare land into a vineyard with his son to encourage the cultivation of alternative products in the city, rolled up his sleeves when he learned through his research that production could be increased using the trellis system pergola method. Spending most of his time in the grape gardens, Metin Ok brought grape seedlings together with the soil in an area of 12 decares three years ago. In the process, Metin and Yakup Ok started to harvest approximately 20 tons of product from their 12-decare grape garden, becoming an example for other producers in the area. The father and son, who are also a source of inspiration for farmers who want to turn to alternative products, produce and sell products made from grape juice.
"WE WERE NOT AFFECTED BY DROUGHT AND FROST THANKS TO THE DRIP SYSTEM"
Metin Ok, expressing satisfaction with the yield obtained from the garden he created with his efforts after long research, stated that they were not affected by the drought and frost that were effective in Gaziantep this year, as they irrigated using the drip system. He mentioned that they are satisfied with the grape yield and that they generally produce products like molasses, sausage, and tarhana from the grapes they grow. Metin Ok said, "For years, we did not understand anything from bush viticulture in this region. The era of bush viticulture is over. We switched to the trellis system pergola method. We irrigate using the drip method. Because of this, we are getting very good yields. Our region is greatly affected by frost and drought. However, we were not much affected by frost and drought."
"WE ARE SATISFIED WITH BOTH YIELD AND QUALITY"
Yakup Ok, who always helps his farmer father and states that they created their garden with the effort they put in after long research, said, "We switched to the trellis system pergola method with a 50% subsidy. We established a vineyard with the trellis system. This year, our yield has been good. There was a frost event around us. However, this frost event did not affect us much. Since our garden is irrigated agriculture, we harvested our product this year with the benefits of water. We generally sell the grapes we harvest as table grapes, but we mostly make molasses, pestil, and tarhana. We are satisfied with both the yield and the quality," he said.
