This year, as the field price of mandarins in Hatay dropped to 2 TL due to high yields, producers distributed tons of fruit to citizens for free. Selim Kamacı, the President of the Samandağ Agricultural Chamber, pointed out the gap between garden and market prices, stating, "While mandarins are sold in the garden for between 2 and 4 TL, they are sold in markets for 30 TL by using excuses like transportation."
This year, the mandarin harvest is abundant in Hatay, where Turkey's most fertile lands are located.
WHEN THE PRICE DROPPED TO 2 TL, THEY DISTRIBUTED TONS FOR FREE
The mandarin, which is so abundant that its branches are almost breaking, has seen prices drop to 2 TL in the fields. Producers who had mandarins left over from the Hatay market, which sold for 5 TL, distributed tons of products for free to citizens in the center of Samandağ.
"THIS YEAR, THE FROST JUST MISSED US"
In statements made by Selim Kamacı, the President of Samandağ Agricultural Chamber, he said, "A frost event occurred in the western part of Turkey. We have experienced it a few times in Samandağ, but this year the frost just missed us. As a chamber, we took action to contribute to the national economy for all farmers. On the other side, there was frost, and the yield decreased. We explained to our farmers to take care of the mandarins and that they could price them in the upcoming period."
"NOT GETTING MUCH DEMAND"
Kamacı continued his remarks as follows: "Although we have made efforts and created beautiful mandarins in terms of both yield and quality, the mandarins that need to be harvested are not getting much demand."
SELLING FOR 30 TL IN MARKETS
Kamacı explained that there is a gap between garden and market prices, stating, "While mandarins are sold for between 2 and 4 TL in the garden, they are sold for 30 TL in markets by making excuses like transportation."
