The Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute of Boğaziçi University stated in a report published after the earthquake that occurred in Istanbul that 445 aftershocks were recorded. The report also emphasized that the aftershocks were concentrated in an area of 15-20 kilometers.

An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2 occurred in Istanbul on April 23. Following the earthquake, the Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute of Boğaziçi University published a report titled "Marmara Sea Earthquake Information Note."

THERE WERE TWO MAIN AFTERSHOCKS

The report stated that since April 23 (as of April 26), 445 aftershocks have occurred, and that there were two main aftershocks with a magnitude of 5.2 following the first main earthquake.

"CONCENTRATED IN A 15-20 KILOMETER AREA"

The report emphasized that the aftershocks were generally concentrated in a 15-20 kilometer area between the Central Marmara and Kumburgaz segments, stating:

"The earthquake was felt in the Marmara Region and surrounding provinces. The instrumental intensity at the epicenter reached MMI 8, and the instrumental intensity value in residential areas reached up to V.

When examining the earthquake acceleration records, it was observed that the spectral acceleration to which the structures were exposed was significantly below the spectrum considered in the design.

Following the relevant earthquake, our tsunami warning messages were sent to AFAD in our country and to the relevant centers of the countries that are members of our system in the region within the sixth minute. The tsunami warning was instrumentally confirmed by observations. This warning was concluded with a message stating that the tsunami threat had passed as of 16:53."

"AFTERSHOCKS WILL CONTINUE FOR A WHILE LONGER"

On the other hand, the Kandilli Observatory stated that aftershocks will continue for a while longer and warned citizens not to enter buildings identified as risky.
