Extreme heat and drought affecting southeastern Australia have led to more than 50 bushfires in recent days. Evacuation warnings have been issued for tens of thousands of people, particularly due to rapidly spreading fires in New South Wales (NSW).
Australia's southeast is virtually surrounded by flames. Forest fires that broke out simultaneously at more than 50 points have led to a major crisis across the state, forcing tens of thousands of people to evacuate. Authorities announced that the fight against the rapidly spreading fires, fueled by the wind, has entered its "most challenging phase."
IMMEDIATE EVACUATION CALL
The State Emergency Service has issued an "immediate evacuation" call in many residential areas, especially along the coast. It has been reported that at least 16 homes have become uninhabitable in the Koolewong and Bulahdelah regions, which are at the center of the fires. Authorities stated that there have been no casualties, but significant material damage has occurred.
WINDY WEATHER COMPLICATES INTERVENTION
More than 1,500 firefighters and over 300 vehicles are responding to the fires. The windy conditions are complicating the teams' efforts while increasing the risk of flames reaching residential areas. Numerous helicopters and planes are also providing aerial support for the firefighting efforts.
HIGH TEMPERATURES INCREASE FIRE THREAT
The government has activated disaster relief programs in the fire-affected areas and urged citizens to closely monitor warnings and comply with evacuation orders. Authorities indicated that the fire threat continues due to the persistence of high temperatures.
