The International Civil Aviation Organization has announced a new restriction on the use of power banks during flights, stating that their use by passengers will be prohibited during the flight. Restrictions on the use of power banks, which are also strictly prohibited in checked baggage, will come into effect on March 27, 2026.

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has imposed significant restrictions on the use of portable chargers (power banks) on airplanes to reduce the risks associated with lithium batteries. The new rules will be effective for all international flights starting from March 27, 2026.

STRICTLY PROHIBITED IN CHECKED LUGGAGE

According to the regulations announced by ICAO, each passenger will be allowed to carry a maximum of two power banks on the aircraft. Power banks can only be carried in cabin baggage (carry-on). It will be strictly prohibited to carry them in checked baggage (suitcase, cargo hold).

CANNOT BE USED DURING FLIGHT

Passengers will not be able to use power banks during the flight. Charging devices with power banks is also included in the ban. Portable chargers should be kept in an accessible position within the cabin; they are generally expected to be on the passenger's person, in the seat pocket, or in the carry-on luggage under the front seat. However, the aircraft crew will continue to carry and use power banks as per operational needs.

New regulation from ICAO

THE AIM IS TO FURTHER STRENGTHEN AVIATION SAFETY

These changes are being implemented with the update to ICAO's Technical Instructions for the Safe Transport of Dangerous Goods (Doc 9284). The regulation was reviewed by the Air Navigation Commission based on the recommendations of the Dangerous Goods Panel and approved by the 36-member ICAO Council. It will be officially communicated to all 193 member states. ICAO officials stated, "These decisions will further enhance the safety of international aviation by addressing the emerging risks posed by passenger power banks."
