Selma Güder, the President of the Chamber of Agricultural Engineers Eskişehir Branch, stated that the water level of Porsuk Dam is still at 31 percent, and that Eskişehir has the lowest and worst water report in the last 65 years.

Pointing out that Eskişehir has received rainfall in recent days, Selma Güder, the President of the TMMOB Chamber of Agricultural Engineers (ZMO) Eskişehir Branch, stated that this rainfall is still not sufficient for the dams and soil. Güder mentioned that the soil is still dry, saying, "According to the water report, our country is experiencing the driest period in the last 52 years. And when we look specifically at Eskişehir, there are 18 provinces, including Eskişehir. In this context, we are a province with the lowest and worst water report in the last 65 years."

"THE WATER LEVEL OF PORSUK DAM IS STILL AROUND 31 PERCENT"

Güder stated that the recent rains have been insufficient, saying, "Currently, the water level of Porsuk Dam in Eskişehir is around 30-31 percent. Is this sufficient? Of course not. When we look at the average of previous years, the current surface rainfall is not enough. In terms of production, about 70-80 percent of our farmers have completed their grain planting. Considering the past August, September, and October, surface rainfall has been low. There is not enough moisture in the soil. The farmers who have planted and the rains in the last couple of days have benefited them. If it rains for our farmers who will plant from this date onwards, it will be very beneficial," she said.

"RAINS PROMISE HOPE COMPARED TO LAST YEAR"

Güder noted that the rains this year are promising compared to the same period last year, but the soil is still dry. She stated, "When we look at the average of previous years in terms of rainfall, our total rainfall in just these three months of July, August, and September was 10 mm. And when we look at the rainfall in October, it was 50 mm. Compared to this period last year, this rainfall is actually very good and promising. If the next rainfall period is also good, our farmers will move positively in terms of grain planting.

However, there is a reality that we are facing drought. When we evaluate rainfall, we want it to be distributed throughout the year for the agricultural season. Because sudden heavy hail or rainfall at certain times can even cause damage to agricultural production. Therefore, especially during the periods of heading and flowering in planting, it is valuable for rainfall to be spread throughout the year, and it is very important for the soil to be moist. If the soil is moist, when planting is done in agriculture, if the soil is saturated with that water, it will return positively to us in terms of yield and quality," she said.

"THE WORST WATER REPORT IN THE LAST 65 YEARS"

Güder pointed out that Eskişehir has the worst water report in the last 65 years, stating, "When we look at Turkey, there is a water report published between September 1, 2024, and September 30, 2025. According to this water report, our country is experiencing the driest period in the last 52 years. And when we look specifically at Eskişehir, there are 18 provinces, including Eskişehir. In this context, we are a province with the lowest and worst water report in the last 65 years.

In this situation, drought is a significant threat to food security. Because it has now come, and it is very important for all ministries, provincial directorates, district directorates, irrigation unions, State Water Works, universities, and local governments to work together on solutions regarding this. As the Chamber of Agricultural Engineers Eskişehir Branch, we are involved in such water-related issues, both as a branch and as our central office. We have discussions with the institutions and organizations I just mentioned, and we will implement these in the upcoming process," she stated.
